Zoom Fishing Plastic Baits

Why am I having so much trouble catching fish?

I fish alot and recently i havent caught anything. I usually fish when its about 50-60 degrees. I fish from the peir or the shore. I use a medium heavy spinning rod and a variety of baits and lures that include: Zoom plastic worms, Tiki wave worms, crank baits of all kinds. Im doing all this and i still havent gotten a BITE all season. What can i do to make my fishing more effiecient. I would like an answer from a regular fisher that is pretty knoweledgeable about angling. (Bass Fishing)

Bass are difficult to catch from the shore or pier. Your fishing is limited to a very small area. You are also fishing when the water is cool and the fish are deep. Unless you are near deep water, probably 12-30 ft deep, when the weather is that cool, you aren’t going to catch many bass. Bass may come shallow in cool weather to feed on sunny days when the bait fish move shallow, but won’t be there very often.

As for tackle, a medium heavy rod is heavy for bass. A medium or medium light will better serve your purposes. If you are fishing for smallmouth bass, go to 8-10 lb test line. For largemouth, 10-15 lb test should work well. I’d suggest you buy some spinner baits, both in-line and clothes pin type in various sizes. They work well as fish finder lures. You don’t say what size your reel is, but a large reel is heavy and hampers casting. In a spinning reel, a reel the size of a Shimano Sedona 2500 is great for bass, especially with lighter lines. Other makers sell similar size reels.

To catch bass, you really need to look at a way to get you out on the water. I fish from kayaks and canoes, inexpensive and fun. You could also consider a belly boat, also know as a float tube. With a float tube you’ll need neoprene waders in waters as cold as you describe, but will be somewhat limited in how deep of water and how much area you will be able to cover.

You may want to consider changing the species for which you fish. Catfish are much easier to catch from shore and piers, even in cooler weather, using cut bait, shrimp, worms, or minnows.
