salmon&Trout Fishing?
i would like to fish for salmon in some of the rivers in NY but i hear you need the right gear as the salmon are strong i have an 8′ berkly pole for cat fishig and 20 test, is this the right gear or should i go heavyer with the line? and what baits to use help me out fishermen…im in ohio
Your right salmon are very strong. The rig you describe is very sufficient to land salmon up to 40 Lbs provide the line is fresh and the knots you use are strong. The main thing to remember when salmon fishing is the proper setting of the drag on the reel.
With 20 Lb test set the drag so it is very hard to pull line of the reel by hand. A salmon will take line and depending on the size you should have allot of during the fight. If you asking about salmon bate the best for drift fishing is salmon roe/eggs. I have fished salmon for over 20 years and have had the best luck with spinner bates and coho flies. Remember they are not eating they are attacking the spinners. With the eggs they are putting them in their mouth to move them to protect them. Because of that when they take roe it will not be a violent event but a pick-up unlike when they hit a spinner or fly. The will hit a fly or spinner with almost the same violent attack as a large mouth bass taking bate.
