Fly Fishing Casting Stroke

fly fishing casting stroke
How far can you cast a slow action fly rod without getting tailing loops?

I’ve only been Fly Fishing for a couple of years and my casting is average at best. I have a medium action rod and when I try to cast more than about 50ft of line I start getting tailing loops. I have heard it’s easier to cast further with a fast action rod without getting tailing loops as the rod doesn’t overload like it does with a slower action rod. So my question is is there a limit of line you can cast properly with a medium action rod? Or are there difference that can be made to your casting stroke that allow you to cast a medium action rod 80-90ft without getting tailing loops?

i’m not sure I can find expert fly fishing advice here but I thought it’s worth a try. Thanks to anyone who offers quality advice on this issue.

Tailing loops comes from an error in your casting stroke. All rods load different and that load changes as you get more line moving in the air. Some of the tailing loops come from some trying to push the rod before they should. That extra push is usually done when a person tries to get more line out there. The cure is learn to keep yourself from doing that extra motion that makes tailing loops.

Well here is some videos that explain some of what I talked about. I will also put some links to things written about tailing loops.

This one is from Orvis and it is on Youtube

This one is from Tim Rajeff he is a champion fly caster. This says is EchoArgentina so the video has some Spanish subtitles in it. I guess it is from their company based in Argentina.

This is Lefty Kreh. The video is not the greatest but he explains tailing loops pretty good in this short video.

Here are a couple of things that I found that is written out about tailing loops.
This is something written out about tailing loops from Field & Stream

This is something written out from Great outdoors

Edit; I can cast the whole fly line with a medium action fly rod without getting tailing loops. Well I do get them sometimes and I never really had to cast the whole fly line while I am fishing.
Rod actions are a funny thing because all companies rod actions are all different even though they designate them as medium action or fast action.
